Photochromic lenses

photochromic lensesBelieve it or not but photochromic lenses have been around since the 1960s. Originally, they were made of glass, but with advanced technology plastic versions were available from around the 1990s.
Until recently, the lens change from light to dark was triggered by the amount of UV light in the atmosphere, which worked well until the introduction of car windscreens with built in UV blockers several years ago. This was great for health protection from harmful UV rays, but that meant the photochromic lenses didn’t work very well in the car.
More recently they have created a visible light photochromatic lens which is triggered by visible light and works behind UV protected windscreens. Great news for photochromatic lovers! And if that wasn’t brilliant enough, there are more than the traditional brown and grey colours to choose from!
Photochromic lenses come with so many benefits, with 100% UV blocker to protect against many eye diseases including external and retinal cancers, cataracts, macular degeneration, for example. Another benefit is the need for only one pair of glasses, instead of one clear pair and one pair of sunglasses. Plus, the new generation of photochromic lenses change colour much more rapidly than in previous years, and are available in single vision, bifocal, and varifocal lenses.
