Stay Compliant – Town halls across Spain are introducing enforcement measures aimed at responsible pet ownership.
Dog owners who fail to follow updated regulations could face substantial fines. These rules now require that certain dogs be kept on a lead in public spaces, be microchipped, and properly registered. Additionally, owners must clean up after their dogs!
Fines will also be issued for failing to register potentially dangerous dogs. These are breeds or mixed breeds that display physical and behavioural traits considered high-risk. Common examples include the Pit Bull, Rottweiler and Doberman. Dogs over 20kg must also wear a muzzle in public, regardless of breed. Each town hall provides an official list and additional guidance, so it’s important for owners to check locally to Stay Compliant.
To support responsible pet ownership and safeguard against unexpected costs, Jennifer Cunningham offers comprehensive pet insurance offering Immediate Healthcare protection for accidents and emergencies.
You are free to use any licensed vet, anywhere in Spain. The plan accepts any pet from as little as 8 weeks of age, regardless of breed. You can make an unlimited number of claims each year, up to the maximum benefit outlined in your plan.
Vaccinations are a must. Dogs must be protected against certain viruses and illnesses, for example Leishmaniosis, Parvovirus, and Rabies. Cats need cover for Feline Infectious Enteritis, Feline Leukaemia, Cat Flu, and Rabies. A full list is available.
Additional benefits include:
• Boarding kennel and cattery fees if you or your partner are hospitalised for more than 48 hours, offering peace of mind during emergencies.
• With European travel cover for emergency treatment for your pet when travelling abroad, using any vet of your choice.
If you make a claim, you will be required to pay an excess.
Liability cover is also available. This protects you financially if your pet causes injury or property damage. We can offer standalone cover for dangerous and non dangerous breeds, or add them to your Home policy with us. The policy covers:
• Third-party bodily injury (e.g. dog bites)
• Damage to third-party property
• Legal fees for defending claims
• Euthanasia and death-related costs due to covered injuries
Some exclusions apply depending on the policy, so always read the small print.
Flexible payment plans are available, making it easy to budget for your pet’s ongoing protection.
As Spanish authorities take a firmer stance on animal responsibility, now is the time to review your pet’s legal and health status. Stay Compliant – visit your local town hall for full guidance on Dangerous Dog breeds, registration and local laws.
