billy female focus july17In the middle of war-torn Britain, William Arnold is forced to leave his parents and home at the age of seven years old. Frightened and alone, Billy finds himself billeted on a farm in rural Northumberland, far removed from his London city beginnings.

In the relative safety of his temporary home, the young boy adopts his new lifestyle with enthusiasm and passion, and forges a close relationship with the farm owners, Frank and Clara. Billy also discovers a rare affinity with old Abe, a perceptive man, who imparts his knowledge and expertise to his young protégé. It is soon apparent that Billy has a special gift, a talent which requires astonishing accuracy and maturity, far beyond his young years.

As the Second World War draws to its successful conclusion, London is barely recognisable as the country recovers from the aftermath of one of the largest massacres the country has ever faced. As Billy grows into a young man back home in the capital, he faces new challenges, betrayals and disappointments. With courageous determination and strength, he is not discouraged nor intimidated, and with his unwavering belief and perseverance, he strives to see his hopes and ambitions realised.

‘Billy’ has received a great review from Jeff Jones, author of ‘Chronicles of Arkadia’, and a proofreader at Mirador Publishing.

“This is easily the best book that I have ever worked on. This one is really very good and engaging, with some strong characterisation. It is lovely when you get to work on a number of books by the same person and get to witness them evolve and develop as a writer and hone their craft.
The book is very reminiscent of “Goodnight Mr. Tom” with a tinge of Catherine Cookson thrown in for good measure, being set in the North East.
I wish her luck with it I really do and please pass on my congratulations to her when you next speak.” Jeff Jones.

Brief Biography

Shirley Dawson moved from Norfolk to the Jalon Valley twelve years ago. Most of her working years were spent as a secretary in a large, rural primary school. Suddenly, with time on her hands, she started to write her first novel. Billy is her fourth novel to be published by Mirador Publishing.

All four books are available on Amazon in paperback and as an ebook.
