British spice start-up Curry on Cooking is on a mission to bring expats a taste of home in the new series of Channel 5’s Bargain-Loving Brits in the Sun. The programme gives an insight to the Brits who exchanged their UK lives for sunnier climes.
In the show 8th March 2018, we see Curry On Cooking’s founders; Derbyshire-born Spice Sisters, Nilam Wright and Veena Josh being followed by a film crew in Spain. We see them selling their kits to British starved curryholics, hosting taster sessions and Indian cooking classes.
Curry On Cooking was born when Nilam moved to Costa Calida and discovered unlike the UK, with its historic ties to India; curry is not on the menu in Spain, Spain has no longstanding links to South Asia and the 300,000 Brits who live there miss a good curry.
Spotting a business opportunity, the Spice Sisters produced a range of six curry kits. The flavours reflect what’s on offer in high street curry houses. The names are instantly recognisable – Madras, Korma, Tikka Masala, Bombay Potatoes, Jalfrezi and Balti – and the quality is second to none. The girls’ motto, printed on every pack, is KISS – Keep it Simple, Sister.
Nilam Wight says ‘although curry is available in Spain – it’s not very nice, it’s expensive to eat out, the right spices are hard to find and everybody was lamenting how they missed a decent curry. As a result we created Curry On Cooking’
The sisters are on a mission to give expats a taste of home….’real Indian food’ at the same time providing a healthy alternative to jars.  The kits come with a shopping list and an easy to follow recipe; they are free from sugar, gluten, dairy, nuts, additives, preservatives and suitable for vegans Veena says: ‘We want to conquer as many tastes buds as possible but also to bust the myth Indian food is unhealthy’.
