walk way well focuson june 22Summer is well and truly here. Temperatures are rapidly rising. But, you don’t need to pack up your trainers with your woolly jumpers. Of course you can keep exercising but BE CAREFUL! Exercising in hot weather puts extra stress on your body. If you don't take care when exercising in the heat, you risk serious illness. Both the exercise itself and the air temperature can increase your core body temperature. To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. It’s working over time. This can jack up your heart rate to a dangerously high level. This is especially true in high humidity since sweat takes longer to evaporate from your skin so it's harder for heat to dissipate.

So what can we do? We know it’s important to maintain an exercise regime and keep moving. We can’t simply STOP completely for the summer months! Well, the answers are obvious. Walk early in the morning or much later in the evening. Drink large quantities of water. Wear lots of suncream and a hat. And ALWAYS avoid the highest temperatures. If you are unsure about how you will handle it then please avoid risk at all costs and go for a nice cool swim instead.
There are some fantastic walking fitness videos on YouTube. With offerings from 1 mile to 10,000K steps that can be completed indoors. So, put on your air con and smash out your exercise in the safety and comfort of your own lounge. If you do find you let your walking routine slip over the summer you can drop me a line and sign up for my 28 Day Challenge in September. Don’t worry too much about cutting back as the temperatures soar as we need to be sensible. But, try not to come to a full halt. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy, healthy and sunny season and always remember to look after #1. That’s you! Keep safe and always try to Walk Your Way Well.
